How to deal with sudden leakage events in the hazardous waste temporary storage of enterprises?

The following are the measures taken by the enterprise’s hazardous waste temporary storage to deal with sudden leakage events:

Improve the construction of facilities

Impermeable treatment: Ensure that the floor and walls of the temporary storage are constructed with a high standard of impermeable materials, such as at least 1 m thick clay layer (permeability coefficient ≤ 10 – 7 cm per second), or 2 mm thick HDPE, or other equivalent artificial impermeable materials. This prevents spills from seeping into the soil and groundwater.

Set up cofferdams: Set up cofferdams in the area where liquid hazardous waste is stored, and the volume of the cofferdam should not be less than the capacity of the largest storage container, or one-fifth of the total storage. In the event of a leak, the cofferdam can temporarily contain the leak and prevent it from spreading.

Equipped with trays: For a single liquid hazardous waste storage container, placed on a leak-proof tray. The pallet should be strong and corrosion-resistant enough to withstand the amount of liquid in the event of a leak in the container.
